Fusion FUSION taster sessions run by The base in partnership with Break. Aimed at young people with mild-moderate learning difficulties, the taster sessions offered a number of exciting activities from learning how to make healthy Pizzas at home through to designing and painting T-shirts, all with the focus on building skills and promoting independence. FUSION launched on Friday September 12th with two groups taking place - the first for young people aged 11-14 between 5.30pm and 7pm, and the second being for those over 14 between 7pm and 9pm. Dyslexia Assist Dyslexia Assist is a newly formed small charity set up by a group of parents who have struggled with supporting their children throughout their education. Our main aim is to share advice and learning tips in an informal and accessible way and invite others to work with us to build a relevant and useful resource for both parents and children. We have no shop, affiliation or request for donations. The website is at http://dyslexia-assist.org.uk/ The children section and blogs have the text loaded as audio files, and videos so that all users can access the content, with aim for parents and children to contribute and the web site to grow and develop organically. One of our aims is to be able to give parents access to a list of qualified tutors that other parents and children can recommend. The section marked tutors asks tutors to participate by giving their tutees a simple questionnaire, the aim of which will not be to assess the quality of the teaching but to look at overall satisfaction with their experience, ie a friendly tutor who understands the needs of the children. Children's Social Lives Survey Parents and carers are invited to take part in a piece of research by Simon Higley, an Educational Psychology doctoral student at the Institute of Education, which is examining children's social lives outside of school. He is interested in the views and experiences of parents of children both with, and without, Special Educational Needs; the activities their children regularly participate in and the opportunities these provide for developing positive relationships and friendships with other children. There has been very little research looking at the social lives of children with Special Educational Needs outside school and therefore this research could be extremely valuable. He would be grateful if you could support this research by completing the online questionnaire at: www.survey.bris.ac.uk/ioe/childrens_social_lives_survey This research meets the ethical guidelines of the British Psychological Society and is approved by the Departmental Ethics Committee. Norfolk Short Breaks Questionnaire If you receive short break for disabled children, or currently do not receive a short break but think you would benefit from short break provision this will help inform the commissioning of short breaks for disabled children, for services to be on line from April 2015 onwards. As the mother of a chronically ill child, a writer and a publisher, I’ve felt incredibly frustrated with teachers and schools over the years. I know the difference that an understanding and informed teacher can make to a child’s experience at school. Funding for pupils with special educational needs (SEN) in Norfolk As part of the Big Conversation in 2010, Norfolk County Council decided to give schools all the funding for children and young people with special educational needs rather than the Council giving it out for individual children. This is supported by the government and should mean children can get help faster than having to wait for a Statement of SEN. Since then we have been working with schools, parents/carers and professionals to work out the best way to do this. The new funding scheme will take effect from 1 September 2012. If my child has a statement of special educational needs - can I appeal for a place at an academy? YES - Parents may appeal to a SENDIST Tribunal for a place in an academy for their child if the academy has refused to take them. If the Tribunal agree with the parent, the academy can appeal against the child attending their school to The Secretary of State for Education. In a recent appeal The Secretary of State said he found it very difficult to see why he would disagree with the Tribunal's decision. This means that it is very unlikely that the academy would win their appeal if the Tribunal has said they must take the child. Entered: August 2012

12th to 18th October 2014 There's more to it than just motor skills Thats why the Dyspraxia Foundation the only charity in the UK dedicated to raising awareness of the condition will be focusing on teenagers for its 2014 Awareness Week during October. If you are a teen or parent of a teen with dyspraxia, you can help by offering to tell your story. This year also sees the charitys first Funky Friday on 17th October. Why not get involved with this great initiative and raise funds and awareness of dyspraxia by simply wearing your most bright, bold or just plain funky item of clothing to work or school. The aim of the research is to find out what it was like for those involved to go through the independent Review Panel or the First Tier Tribunal .
